Despite a highly successful career elsewhere, Karrion Kross had admitted that WWE is the only place that he wanted to end up.
The current NXT Champion signed with WWE in early 2020 and hasn’t looked back since. Not even a separated shoulder in August could derail the big man’s momentum.
As Kross looks to defend his title at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, the champion reflected on his journey to WWE.
Speaking to Lucha Libre Online, The Herald of Doomsday said that it had always been his dream to wrestle for WWE.
“It was for a variety of reasons. I’ll tell you the most important reason. To me was the fact that WWE was always the place that I wanted to be since I was a kid. I’ll admit it, a lot of us from the independents, we hear stories. Whether they are true or not. At different points in people’s careers, sometimes they become discouraged on pursuing the ultimate goal, the ultimate dream. They convinced themselves to sell for less, and I was like, I’m not going to get caught up with that. I’m going to follow my heart, my soul and my intuition on this. I’m going to continue to stay the course for the WWE. You’re not going to get caught up with that. So it was very important for me and for my soul to fulfil this. It’s the only job I’ve ever wanted since I was a kid. So that was the first reason.”
Reflecting further, Kross highlighted the doubting nature of others and the challenge of working for WWE as his motivation to succeed.
“The second reason and I’ve never said this before, but the second reason had a lot to do with the fact that so many people thought that I would be extremely successful very quickly elsewhere. I took that as a challenge. I know they meant it as a compliment. But to be honest, and I don’t want to start swearing, but it made me very mad. I was like, why would you think that I would find so much success so quickly? I sat in that and thought about it. I’m like no, you know what? Whether that was your intention or not, challenge accepted. Now I’m going to show you that I’m going to go to the top of the food chain in this industry, and I’m going to show you that I’m not going to get lost in the shuffle and I’m going to ascend to exactly where I know I could be. I’m going to put in everything you think that I can’t, you know, all of everything that I am, I’m going to put it all in one direction and I’m going to manifest my success there, and that’s the truth”. “I felt whole again. It felt like everything came full circle.”
After vacating his newly won NXT Title in August, Kross immediately set his sights on getting back in the ring. This meant embarking on a “vicious” rehab program which would see him return to action in just three months and eventually reclaim the championship he never lost.
After overcoming the injury and winning back the NXT Title, Kross says that he feels as though he’s back where he should be and ready for the next challenge.
“I have said this before, to people, my whole intention in recovering and regaining the title was to get back to where we were. But everything went so well with the recovery and just the process that I very much feel like I exceeded where I was initially. We’ve blown that away. We’re on a whole new level now. And what can I say? I’m very happy about it. Now the real work begins in. I can’t wait”.
Following the shocking return of Adam Cole, on the most recent episode of the black and gold brand, Kross will now defend his championship in a Fatal-Five-Way Match at NXT TakeOver: In Your House.
The event is set to take place Sunday June 13th.
