Former WWE Superstar JTG has revealed that Vince McMahon wanted to call him up to the main roster despite him not having a contract with the company.
JTG joined the WWE family in 2006 as part of their developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling that was then run by Paul Heyman. It was in OVW that he found a kindred spirit and tag team partner in Shad Gaspard and the two men found success together, winning the OVW Southern Tag Team Title twice.
It was the pair’s shenanigans in vignettes however that caught the eye of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. Once McMahon saw the personality of the team that would become known as Cryme Tyme, he wanted them on Raw – despite never seeing JTG wrestle and despite JTG not actually being signed to a contract.
Speaking on GOW MEDIA 216 JTG revealed how his signing with the company came to be:
“We did some vignettes in OVW and those vignettes was the gem that got me hired. Vince McMahon never saw me wrestle. He didn’t know if I could wrestle or not, he just knew that me and Shad had great chemistry on-screen.”
“He was like, ‘Yo, these guys are funny.’ We beat up a guy at the ATM, beat up a cop from the shop. ‘That’s hilarious, I want that on Raw. I wanna bring them up to TV.’ They were like, ‘Well, the big one [Shad Gaspard] is signed. The little one [JTG] is not under contract.’ ‘Well, sign him!’ And I got the call, and I hit the floor running after that.”
Between 2006 and 2010 – in two different stints with WWE – Cryme Tyme proved a popular addition to the roster with fans. They formed an alliance with John Cena known as CTC in 2008, helping Cena to upset and antagonise JBL during the men’s feud with one another.
