Jon Moxley revealed that Wheeler Yuta almost didn’t make it in The Blackpool Combat Club.
Wheeler Yuta wrestled Jon Moxley three times on AEW Dynamite, leading to him joining The Blackpool Combat Club. Yuta has since been involved in the group’s efforts to shut up The Jericho Appreciation Society. Although Bryan Danielson and William Regal accepted Yuta, his inclusion in the group almost didn’t come to be.
While speaking on his wife’s podcast, The Sessions with Renee Paquette, Jon Moxley revealed that he was initially scheduled to face Brian Kendrick instead of Wheeler Yuta. However, a controversy surrounding Kendrick led to Yuta getting the match instead:
“The thing with Wheeler was an accident. I was supposed to wrestle Brian Kendrick, hour before the show, that match is not happening … The show starts in an hour and Tony was like, ‘Wheeler!’ … so we go and have a little match. That was either before or after Bryan did the promo, and he’s one of the guys, I think Bryan mentioned him by name, and then it just like, very naturally happened and before you know it, he’s in the group.”
Tony Khan removed Kendrick after speaking about various conspiracy theories regarding Sandy Hook and making some anti-Semitic comments in videos that resurfaced following his WWE exit. Yuta replaced Kendrick and went on to have that series of matches with Moxley. It wasn’t until Yuta’s third battle with Moxley that Danielson and Regal accepted him into their group.
