Johnny Gargano Recalls His Iconic Ring Gear Catching On Fire

Johnny Gargano WWE NXT

NXT Grand Slam Champion Johnny Gargano has recalled the moment his iconic NXT: TakeOver New York ring gear burst into flames, just days before his incredible match against long-time rival Adam Cole.

Speaking on his twitch channel, the Heart and Soul of NXT would revisit many of his iconic pieces of ring gear revealing the stories and design process behind them. Gargano would reveal a plethora of incredible Easter eggs and subtle details that are too plentiful to cover in one article, however, amongst them included a homage to Shawn Michaels and a homage to wife and fellow WWE Superstar Candice LeRae.

However, one of the most shocking revelations from the steam [the highlights of which are available on Gargano’s YouTube channel] was the Gargano’s iconic Iron Man inspired TakeOver: New York gear caught on flames just days before he was due to receive it – causing Gargano’s incredible ring gear suppliers – Main Event Gear – to recreate the look in just a number of days whilst moving away from the leather material that was prone to igniting in flames – Johnny Blaze style.

“There is… a heck of a story behind this gear… Main Event Gear was making this jacket a week before and it caught on fire, they told me and they had to at the last minute completely redo it, make it from scratch. As you can see, they had to use like… a different fabric, so this is not like normal fabric, this is not like leather because the leather caught on fire.@

Gargano would go onto reveal that one of his favourite Easter eggs from his NXT TakeOver gear was a small bejewelled cupcake on the back of his TakeOver: New York gear which he would surprise his long term partner with, keeping her in the dark about its inclusion until the gear arrived.

The latest edition of AEW Dynamite emanated from Cleveland, OH, and fans were hoping to see a hometown hero make his return to wrestling and debut for the company. Throughout the night, fans could be heard chanting “Johnny Wrestling” in reference to former NXT Champion and Cleveland native Johnny Gargano.

While Johnny Gargano didn’t make an appearance, he did hear the chants and took to social media to respond, saying that:

“I heard you and you have no idea how much it means to me that you’re excited to see me back at it.

It’s scary to step away because your insecurities say “they’ll forget about you”.. but you haven’t forgotten and I promise that I will make it up to you asap. #JohnnyWrestling”

Last seen on the December 7th episode of NXT 2.0, Johnny Gargano made a heartwarming goodbye speech to the NXT crowd before being attacked by Grayson Waller. During his speech, he said that he would be stepping away from wrestling to focus on becoming a father with his wife Candice LeRae, who is due to give birth in February.

Gargano made the decision to take time away from wresting well over a year ago before his wife was even pregnant, but commented that the timing couldn’t have been more perfect and recently posted a video of himself in July of 2021 saying that he was “99.99999% sure he wouldn’t re-sign” when his NXT contract was up.

Johnny Gargano’s future is still uncertain as the star hasn’t made any indication of where he’ll end up, despite recently teasing that he’s itching to get back into the ring.
