Johnny Elite, the former John Morrison, was Samoa Joe’s mystery opponent in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
Ahead of the May 18th edition of AEW Dynamite it was announced that Samoa Joe would be facing a ‘joker’ in the first round of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
With excitement in the air, the fans in attendance didn’t have to wait long to find out long who would be stepping into the ring with the Samoan Submission Machine. Appearing under the name Johnny Elite, the former John Morrison in WWE pushed Joe all of the way, delivering his own trademark mix of unorthodox offence.
For a brief moment it appeared that the debutant might actually grab the win as he delivered a 450 Splash from the top rope, but Joe fought back to deliver a Muscle Buster to score the victory. With the win, Joe advances to the semi-finals where he will face with Kyle O’Reilly or Rey Fenix.
After the match Joe was attacked by Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh and Sonjay Dutt with a lead pipe in hand. However, the trio were eventually run off by Rocky Romero, Trent and Chuck Taylor who arrived wielding steel chairs.

The former John Morrison was released by WWE back in November 2021. The star had returned to the company in January 2020 re-joining his former partner The Miz.
After leaving WWE, the high-flyer headed back to the independent scene where he appeared at Triplemania XXX as well as in GCW.
Elsewhere in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, Joe is now one win away from a spot in the final against either Jeff Hardy or Adam Cole.
