Although he only wrestled once in 2022, John Cena is already pencilled in for an appearance at WWE’s biggest show of 2023.
Although Cena is now very much part-time his matches and appearances with WWE remain a hit at the box office. For his recent match on SmackDown, WWE sold a huge number of tickets after he was announced, while the TV rating was SmackDown’s highest in a little over two years.
This obviously means that when Cena steps into the ring at WrestleMania, it’s a huge deal for fans as well as his opponent.
John Cena Set For Fresh WrestleMania Match-Up
In recent months there has been a large amount of speculation regarding Cena’s match at WrestleMania 39. However. the picture now appears a little clearer. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that the plan appears to be for Cena to face current United States Champion Austin Theory. This is despite rumours that he could have been wrestling Logan Paul.
“It looks like it’s gonna be Cena and Theory at ‘Mania, that’s what it’s looking like.”
“It was the plan way, way back but Logan Paul had asked to be against Cena but they never said that. There was definitely talk of Cena and Logan Paul at one point in November/December.”
It was recently reported that Cena filmed a segment with Theory when he was at the December 30th episode of SmackDown. Although it’s unclear what the segment is for, something was filmed. Interestingly, Theory was pulled from a live event appearance where he’d been due to face Seth Rollins, so that he could take part in the segment.
The speculation around a potential match between John Cena and Logan Paul came from the YouTube star himself. Speaking shortly after his match with Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel, Paul revealed that he’d pitched to face Cena directly to Triple H.
Austin Theory will be back in action on the special 30th anniversary edition of Monday Night Raw when he defends hit title against Bobby Lashley.
