John Cena is back in the WWE and has won his first match since January 2019.
It was Cena’s first match of any kind since being defeated by ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36. While you have to go all the way back to January 13th 2019 for his last victory, where he overcame Baron Corbin at a house show in Huntsville, Alabama.
After the July 23rd edition of SmackDown went off the air the 16-time world champion teamed up with Rey and Dominik Mysterio to take on Roman Reigns and The Usos. Cena’s team emerged victorious after Reigns walked out on the match.
After making his shocking return to WWE less than a week previously, John Cena arrived on SmackDown looking for answers. After confronting Roman Reigns at Money In The Bank, Cena wasted little time in challenging the Universal Champion to a match at SummerSlam on RAW the following night.
When it came time for Reigns to answer Cena’s challenge he stated that Cena was a “nostalgia act” doing the “same old thing”. Reigns continued to say that we won’t be seeing John Cena in the main event of SummerSlam because his answer to the challenge is no.
This brought Finn Balor to the ring to make a challenge of his own. A challenge that the Tribal Chief accepted.
