John Cena has gone into more detail about his upcoming in-ring retirement.
At 46 years old, Cena has been very open in recent months about his status as an active in-ring competitor. Having competed in at least one match every year since 2002, John Cena has one of the most decorated records in WWE history and has discussed his final match in a number of interviews and has revealed how he still wants to be a part of the promotion after retirement.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Cena has given a timeframe in regards to his retirement and has admitted that it is something that will happen soon and is just not being considered:
“That’s not a maybe. That time is gonna come and it’s gonna come soon,”
Cena continued, noting that he will be turning 47 in April and that his final match will take place before he turns 50:
“I made a promise to the consumer early on, to WWE fans, ’cause I know how tough it is to be a fan. You gotta come out of pocket — and WWE has a ton of content — it takes a lot to be a passionate fan and our fanbase is passionate and global. I never wanted to go out there just for the sake of going out there. And I’m gonna be 47 this year. I feel great. So inside I feel great, but I know what it takes to be a WWE performer night in and night out and I don’t ever wanna just go out there and do it to do it.
I wanna have the passion — the same passion as the fanbase — and I wanna give them exactly what they give me. The miles on the speedometer say, ‘Hey, that’s gotta be done before 50.'”
John Cena Required Multiple Surgeries After Recent Match
In the autumn of 2023, Cena returned to WWE for a lengthy stint with the company, which included multiple appearances on SmackDown, Premium Live Events and competing in multiple televised matches. The former World Champion would not end his recent run unscathed as two surgical procedures were required after his most recent match against Solo Sikoa. Towards the end of November, John Cena gave the fans an update on his recovery.
