The main event for SummerSlam could see a return for the sixteen-time champion of the world John Cena as he potentially squares off with Roman Reigns according to a new report.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has reported in his newsletter that rumours are swirling around WWE that Roman Reigns could defend his WWE Universal Title against Cena at August’s SummerSlam. According to Meltzer, stories are circulating that WWE has a main event and a guest host that would make SummerSlam ‘stadium-worthy.’
That is on the back of previous reports that the front runner to host SummerSlam is the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Potentially up to 60,000 fans could fill that stadium for the event, pandemic restrictions notwithstanding.
Meltzer also noted that Cena had been in talks with the company to appear on the 16th of July episode of SmackDown emanating from Houston. That show will be the first back on the road for the company that hasn’t left Florida since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
John Cena and Roman Reigns did face off one on one at No Mercy 2017 in a match Meltzer says was designed to pass the torch from Cena to Reigns. This was during the era WWE was having difficulty in finding ways to present Reigns that would endear him to fans. Since Reigns’ return at SummerSlam 2020, Reigns has not had the same concern about fan support as ‘The Tribal Chief’ aligned himself with Paul Heyman.
Meltzer also noted that other potential opponents for Reigns that could be worthy of headlining such a venue include The Rock, who Meltzer says should be saved for WrestleMania. Other names mention include Brock Lesnar where there is a natural story surrounding where Heyman’s allegiances would lie. Dave Meltzer also mentions The Undertaker or Goldberg making a return but commented that those two would be a stretch.
SummerSlam is also reportedly headed to a different night, with stories circulating that it could be moved from WWE’s traditional pay-per-view day of Sunday to Saturday 21st of August.
