John Cena is signed to star in a new film on Apple TV+.
Deadline reports that Cena will star in Matchbox, a live-action film based on the popular Matchbox Cars line from Mattel. The film is being produced by Skydance and Mattel Films and will be directed by Sam Hargrave.
David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay for the film, which takes inspiration from the real-world die-cast toy vehicle line invented in 1953. Automotive enthusiast Jack Odell invented the car toy line as his daughter’s school only allowed students to bring toys to school if they were small enough to fit inside a box of matches. His daughter’s friends soon clamored for more of these cars, and the iconic toy line was born. Deadline writes:
The high standards of authenticity for Matchbox die-cast cars have driven the brand for over 70 years and generations of fans. Today, two Matchbox cars are sold every second somewhere around the world.
Cena also had a cameo in Mattel’s Barbie, something that only came about after a chance encounter with star Margot Robbie.
When Will John Cena Retire From WWE?
At Money in the Bank on July 6th, Cena made a surprise appearance and announced that he would be officially retiring from WWE in 2025. While many initially expected that he’d be retiring at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, Cena later clarified that he would wrestle throughout the year with his final bout taking place in December of 2025.
Following the massive announcement, CM Punk made it clear that he wants to wrestle John Cena one more time before Cena hangs up his boots.
Drew McIntyre also wants to be part of Cena’s retirement tour and is willing to “drive management crazy” in order to make it happen.
