John Cena almost faced a former iconic rival during his ongoing WWE Farewell Tour.
The Last Real Champion has faced many new names and former rivals in his ongoing retirement run this year. He faced superstars like Cody Rhodes, Logan Paul, Randy Orton, CM Punk, among others. And now, with only 6 dates left before his final match in December, many are speculating who the remaining people left for him to square off against.
Among the notable names fans wanted him to face in his final wrestling run was Rob Van Dam. Both men had a notable feud in 2006, which culminated at that year’s ECW One Night Stand event, which saw the crowd get hostile against The Cenation Leader and RVD winning the WWE Championship.
As it turns out, fans were close to seeing John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam this year. In an interview with TMZ Sports, RVD revealed that he had discussed being part of John’s final match with WWE, which generated interest. Signs were pointing to the match taking place, but then he got injured.
I wanted to be one of the return matches for John Cena on his retirement tour. I was talking to them. There was a lot of interest. Without giving away too many details, you know, we were probably going to do it. And then I broke my heels.”
Rob Van Dam On WWE’s Handling Of John Cena’s Farewell Tour
Another topic discussed during RVD’s recent interview was about some fans being disappointed about how WWE handled Cena’s Farewell Tour, especially with many claiming he had a failed heel run. However, the Hall of Famer doesn’t feel the same.
When RVD was asked if he felt WWE did John Cena justice to his Farewell Tour, he admitted that he doesn’t watch the program enough and that the perspective from fans always varied:
I probably don’t watch it [the product] nearly as much as you, so I don’t know that. I mean, I just don’t, I haven’t seen that much of it. I tune in and out and get clips here or there, and it seems like I mean, I loved watching him be a heel at first. I thought he was so entertaining. And then it’s hard being out of the circle because, like, if you only get all of your information from the internet, sometimes it’s so skewed. Like, there was one point where I thought that all the fans were unhappy with the product.
They were miserable complaining, and then I went to a live WWE show was so happy, and it was a great show, and everybody was like right on queue for their pops. You know, it was like, it was amazing. And it made me realize, like I said, I think that’s like 1% of the people that are actually going to complain and feel like their access to power is somehow in jeopardy if someone finds out that you can really have a different opinion than them.”
