John Cena is now free and clear of his movie commitments in the run-up to SummerSlam and a potential main event match according to a new report.
Speculation has run rampant over the past few months over Cena’s status for SummerSlam. With the event being WWE’s first chance to fill a stadium since the pandemic era started in March 2020, the company wants all hands on deck to fill Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
2021 has been an exceptionally busy year for Cena despite the lockdown. He has two blockbuster movies released this year. Cena plays the role Jakob Toretto in the latest installment of The Fast and Furious franchise, F9. Cena has also reprised his role as Peacemaker in this summer’s Marvel offering The Suicide Squad.
According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cena is now free of his acting responsibilities until after SummerSlam. Meltzer described a match between Cena and Roman Reigns as “locked in” with all signs pointing to the two men meeting in the SummerSlam main event for the WWE Universal Championship.
Meltzer does offer a word of caution that John Cena is set to star in the movie Argylle where he will share the screen with Henry Cavill, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dua Lipa. The spy thriller is set to be the first in a trilogy of movies based on the writing of Ellie Conway.
Argylle is due to begin shooting in Europe in August. Meltzer adds that Cena may begin shooting after SummerSlam with the possibility of him needing days off so he can fulfill both commitments.
John Cena made his last appearance for WWE in the Firefly Funhouse match at WrestleMania 36. The cinematic trip through Cena’s career ended with The Fiend Bray Wyatt pinning him in a ring while Funhouse Bray Wyatt counted the pinfall.
