Wrestling veteran claims John Cena declined to take several losses in WWE.
Although John Cena is highly regarded as one of the greatest of all time, one of the major criticisms about him is that back then, he refused to put over other talents and “buried” younger stars. Among those who spoke about this was former WWE star Jack Swagger, who later became Jake Hager in AEW, who claims The Cenation Leader refused to put over him and other stars.
His comments were later discussed on Eric Bischoff’s 83 Weeks podcast last week, wherein the WWE legend stated he didn’t believe it, as Jake was only told that John refused to put him over. In that same video, former superstar Matt Morgan supported Hager’s claims and stated Cena told the company at least 10 guys that he didn’t want to put anyone over, noting that it was how top guys remained on top.
There’s a reason top guys stay top guys. And a big part of that is refusing to put over up and commerce that the fans are starting to change, and start rooting for. I.e. see [Zack] Ryder, Jack Swagger at the time, Alberto Del Rio at the time, please tell me who John Cena put over Eric, from the years, 2004-2012? [He] wouldn’t even allow NXT as an entire group and stable to beat his ass down where Wade Barrett could’ve came out as the world champion eventually. It was the hottest story in the company in the last five years when it started. He still said no.
Eric, please name any WWE agent on God Green earth, that would actually pull Jack Swagger aside and say “I’m not supposed to tell you this brother, but sooner doesn’t wanna do the job for you!“ LMFAO! Said no WWE Agent of all time Lol! They would be fired the next day. They know that they get in where they fit in. None of them in 1 million years would cross John Cena as agents. None of them not one. He was their money train at the time.”
Erc Bischoff Remains Firm About Denying Jake Hager’s Claims About John Cena
Matt Morgan’s comments were brought up in the latest 83 Weeks podcast. Eric shared that he has a different perspective on life and how it works, like how the former superstar does.
Bischoff then questioned Matt if he could name any top star for the last two decades who “doesn’t get to voice an opinion about who they work with.” The wrestling legend noted that top stars like John Cena, The Rock, Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, and even AEW star MJF eventually got to voice out who they wanted to work with and gained creative control.
The WWE legend added that although John Cena may have had power over people like Jake and Matt claimed, everybody else who was in the top star position did, and they could get a say about their opponents and contracts.
Eric added that he was sure Vince McMahon and John had several conversations in the past about opponents and if the business would benefit if somebody went over or not. Eric continued that this doesn’t make Cena an evil character or forcing his way, but simply voicing his opinion and getting a vote.
