John Cena may be sitting on top of the world after conquering the wrestling world and now making his substantial impression on Hollywood but things haven’t always been as rosy for the sixteen-time champion of the world.
Cena is one of wrestling’s true megastars, having first captured the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. Successive WrestleMania main events followed as he battled WWE Hall Of Famers-in-waiting Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Edge on The Grandest Stage Of Them All. The former Dr. Of Thuganomics equaled Ric Flair’s record-setting sixteen world title reigns at the 2017 Royal Rumble, defeating AJ Styles for the WWE Title.
With the wrestling world conquered John Cena set his sights on the riches of Hollywood where he has established himself as a regular fixture much like Dwayne Johnson and Dave Bautista before him. Starring in the latest installment of The Fast And The Furious franchise F9, Cena will also appear in Marvel’s The Suicide Squad later in 2021 as Peacemaker.
Speaking to The Sun as part of the promotion of F9, Cena revealed that life has not always been as good as he recalled having to sleep in his car while working at a gym as he didn’t make enough money to have a bed every night.
“I slept in my car for a while, which happened to be a very roomy 1991 Lincoln Town Car. I had my clothes in the trunk and I slept in the back seat. I’d wake up, use the locker rooms and the shower and repeat the process all over again.”
Throughout his WWE career, Cena has always been billed from his hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts but Cena headed west in 1999, moving to California. It was there that John Cena joined independent promotion UPW which also was home to Samoa Joe, Frankie Kazarian, and Christopher Daniels at the time. This launched Cena into the world of WWE but according to Cena, his own father did not see things working out for the young Cena.
“Dad told me I would be home with my tail between my legs in two weeks. Sure enough, I went through my resources quickly and had to think on my feet. I didn’t want to go home crying.”
In the end, things worked out rather well for John Cena. As well as his two blockbuster movies in cinemas this summer, reports have suggested that Cena might have a busy few months coming up as he is the rumoured opponent for Roman Reigns in the main event of SummerSlam.
