Although John Cena’s WWE appearances are now few and far between the 16-time World Champion returned to the ring on the December 30th edition of Friday Night SmackDown.
Stepping back inside the ropes for the first time in more than a year, Cena teamed with Kevin Owens to defeat Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns. Cena’s appearance comes after it was reported that those within the company are expecting him to work WrestleMania 39. This is despite a filming schedule that will leave him unable to attend television tapings for much of February and March.
John Cena In Line For Huge WrestleMania Match-Up
A further report has now revealed that John Cena will be facing Logan Paul at the event. Despite hints that Cena could face Austin Theory, it has now been reported by WrestlingNewsCo that the WWE legend will square off against YouTube sensation Logan Paul.
Paul is currently out of action after sustaining a knee injury during his clash with Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel on November 5th. However, the star wasted little time in setting sights on a WrestleMania match, publicly pitching for a showdown with Cena.
Speaking back in November, Paul said that the match would “break the internet” before revealing that he had already pitched the match to Triple H.
“After the Crown Jewel event, John Cena posted about me on his Instagram. And then I saw an article saying he’s looking for an opponent at WrestleMania,” Paul explained. “I favorited it, responded with “the eyes”. I mean, truthfully, I think me vs. John Cena would break the internet. I texted Triple H right away, ‘do you want to break the internet again?’ That’s a dream matchup, dude: at WrestleMania, in LA, on my birthday. Triple H, throw me a bone, give me a birthday present, let me take out John Cena. And that’d be crazy.”
One match that seemingly won’t be taking place at WrestleMania 39 is the long-awaited singles match between Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey. It has been reported that the match is now “not the plan” for the spectacular in April 2023.
