John Cena is eternally thankful that he got to wrestle one of the greatest wrestlers of all time in a marquee match.
One year on from his first WrestleMania main event, which saw Cena defeat Triple H, the 16-time World Champion would headline The Show of Shows once again, this time against Shawn Michaels.
Taking place in 2007, Tag Team Champions Cena and Michaels would be opponents for the evening and saw their relationship gradually deteriorate in the weeks leading up to the event. After nearly 30 minutes of in-ring action, Cena would win the match via submission.
Looking back on the match on his TikTok account, Cena credited Michaels as one of the best to ever do it and noted how the crowd were excited about the encounter:
WrestleMania 23, Ford Field in Detroit. I think the lesson here is don’t lend me your rental car. Driving to endanger but with a championship on my mind as I face off against The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels. He is one of the best performers in the ring of all time, an incredible storyteller and you can see everyone standing on their feet in the background that this is a contest that they were into.
Cena continued, stating that Michaels was and still is someone who he has an immense amount of respect for and is still in disbelief that he got to defeat The Hall of Famer in the biggest match on the WWE calendar:
This was a wonderful chance to work with someone who I idolised and continue to look up to as a professional. This is the absolute final moment of the match where both of us are exhausted and somehow I get myself a main event WrestleMania win over Shawn Micheals. In that moment, and still to this day, means everything.
