The WWE star that many fans want to see battle John Cena is confident they will still face off during the latter’s retirement tour.
Fans suggested several names to be one of John Cena‘s opponents during his retirement tour this year, with Gunther being the most common. The Ring General is arguably one of the most brutal and dominant superstars in WWE today, whether in the ring or on the microphone, making him a perfect rival to The Cenation Leader.
However, the paths of both stars have yet to cross during The Last Real Champion’s Farewell Tour, as both are still heels and World Champions of the Stamford-based promotion. However, the World Heavyweight Champion remains confident that he will eventually get to share the ring with the Undisputed Champion.
Gunther Remains Hopeful He Will Get To Share The Ring With John Cena Before He Retires
In a recent appearance on Radio Times, Gunther talked about Cena’s heel turn and stated that it was great John was able to have that moment before retiring, as he deserved it.
The Ring General also noted that it was great to have him back, but they haven’t interacted much since they are in different brands, but stated there’s still a lot of time before the end of the year.
It’s great for him that he’s able to do that and say, ‘This is the way I want to finish it and the way I want to go out.’ It’s a great way to do it. If somebody deserves it, then it’s him. It’s good to have him back around. Obviously, I have not interacted with him or seen him much because he’s on SmackDown mostly, but who knows, there’s still a long time left, so maybe there’s a chance to get in there with him before he hangs it up.”
Gunther continued to praise John Cena by stating that if somebody knows wrestling, they know the latter. The World Heavyweight Champion added that the Undisputed Champion doesn’t even need to invest a whole year, as he’s financially well-off, but it was a classy way to go out and dedicate one more year to give back to the industry.
He doesn’t need to do it, he’s financially got bigger fish to fry with his movies and he’s a made man already, so there’s no pressure for him to do all of that, but he decided to invest a whole year into this. It’s a very classy way for someone like him to go out and have this one year of giving back and do it one more time.”

Gunther and John Cena are set to be in action at SummerSlam, but not against each other. The former will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against CM Punk, while the latter will be in a rematch against Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed title.
