John Cena Explains Why He Still Loves Vince McMahon: “I Know People Are Going To Be Angry”

John Cena Vince McMahon

John Cena has reiterated his support for Vince McMahon, despite the serious allegations currently surrounding the former WWE Chairman.

In January 2024, Janel Grant filed a lawsuit accusing McMahon of sexual assault and sex trafficking, sparking widespread backlash and shifting public perception of the long-time WWE figurehead. Since then, various wrestlers have been questioned about their views on McMahon, with reactions ranging from silence to cautious commentary.

Cena, one of the company’s most prominent figures and a known McMahon loyalist, previously stated he would continue to “love the person that he loves” even if they “have a hill to climb.” In a recent New York Times profile, the 16-time world champion stood by that view.

“I don’t care who hears it: I love Vince,” Cena said. “I’m not downplaying anything that needs to be decided or allegations of any kind, but when I love somebody, I love them wholeheartedly. I know people are going to be angry about that, but they can’t put their value on my relationship with somebody I love.”

While Cena acknowledged the gravity of the accusations, he made it clear that they haven’t changed his personal feelings toward McMahon. His remarks come as WWE continues to distance itself from its former CEO, who resigned from all roles within the company in light of the legal situation.

McMahon, once the most powerful figure in professional wrestling, has seen his legacy called into question following a series of legal and ethical controversies. Cena’s comments are among the few public statements in strong defence of McMahon from a major WWE name.

How Have John Cena’s Merchandise Sales Been Since His Heel Turn?

WWE President Nick Khan spoke about how John Cena’s merchandise sales have been since his historic heel turn at the 2025 Elimination Chamber. Khan said that interestingly Cena’s merchandise sales, despite his heel turn, are still “off the charts,” stating that Cena’s merch continues to be the best seller at almost every event.
