John Cena has recalled sinking three large beers before jumping into the ring and performing at WrestleMania.
The early months of 2018 were a strange and often frustrating time for John Cena on WWE television. He failed to win the Royal Rumble, failed to become number one contender for the Universal Championship, and also came up short in his bid to win the WWE Title.
This series of setbacks left him looking down the barrel of WrestleMania 34 without a match on the card. His solution to this problem was to call out The Undertaker. The only problem being that The Undertaker had suffered a devastating loss to Roman Reigns the year before. Following the defeat, he left his coat and hat in the ring, signalling that he was calling time on his legendary career.
Despite Cena’s best efforts WrestleMania 34 began with him still not knowing whether Taker would show up. So this meant that the 16-time World Champion spent the first portion of the show sat in the crowd with fans. Although he eventually got his wish and The Phenom answered his challenge, Cena was defeated in a matter of minutes by the returning legend.
Reflecting on the match and the somewhat unusual journey to get there on the Pat McAfee Show, Cena recalled seeing off three beers before hopping the barrier to face the Deadman.
“Everybody is chilled and watched the show. Then I made great friends with some people who travelled from Australia, people who travelled from across the US, buying each other beers. Literally, I crushed three tall drafts before they told me The Undertaker was there and I’d to hop the barricade and go wrestle The Undertaker. That was a great experience for me ’cause I got to be something I admired, something I am, I got to be a fan.”
During the conversation with McAfee, Cena also looked back on his most recent run with WWE. The sure-fire Hall of Famer said that while he was surprised to receive such a positive reaction from fans, he also admitted that he could probably now been seen as a nostalgia act.
