John Cena has confirmed one of wrestling’s worst-kept secrets that he will be returning to the WWE ring during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon but the sixteen-time WWE Champion has stopped short of saying when a return is likely to happen.
Multiple reports in recent weeks have suggested Cena has been in talks with WWE about a return, with a strong rumour being that he is in line to face Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship in the main event of SummerSlam. The company are apparently keen to pull out all the stops for this year’s ‘Biggest Party Of The Summer’ as they head back out onto the road. SummerSlam 2021 will take place in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas so WWE will be keen to have a main event capable of selling out the home of NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
Appearing on The Tonight Show ostensibly to promote his latest movie F9, Cena was asked by Fallon if he was planning a return to the ring.
“Those rumors are true. I will definitely be back to the WWE, I just don’t know when. […] I haven’t had my last match and I can’t wait to have my next match.”
John Cena went on to explain that the insurance required for his ever-growing list of movie roles prevents him from jumping back in a wrestling ring whenever he feels like it:
“All these opportunities have led to more opportunities. I said before, once you do one of these things the insurance doesn’t let you go wrestle on the weekends so we’ll see what happens.”
Cena has recently finished filming the Peacemaker series for HBO Max. Cena plays the titular character and will be seen in DC’s The Suicide Squad playing the character later this summer. With filming wrapped on that project, WWE fans will be hoping they are able to see Cena before his next movie role.
