John Cena Believes There’s 10 Years Worth Of Story In Turning Him Heel

Though his full-time career in wrestling is now behind him, John Cena believes there is ten years of story in a heel turn.

John Cena is renowned for being the ultimate wrestling babyface, having been in the role for close to two decades. His only stint in WWE as a heel lasted around a year; this ended when he joined Kurt Angle’s team at the 2003 Survivor Series pay-per-view.

During an interview with GQ, however, the former multi-time WWE and World Heavyweight Champion believes there would be an abundance of story depth if he were to turn heel now (h/t Wrestling Inc.):

“It takes a certain type of individual to go out there and play your hit song every night for two decades. There are decisions I can make, but I don’t make. ‘Okay, now John Cena’s gonna be a bad guy.’ I don’t make that choice, then I can be like ‘okay, I’m never gonna be a bad guy. How can I nuance a virtuous character?’ Would it have been great to be able to mess with the flaws of WWE John Cena? Oh my goodness, I think there is another 10 years of story in there, but it’s not my choice. I don’t run the company.”

A John Cena heel turn has been something fans have clamoured for over the past decade, though WWE has never pulled the trigger on turning one of their most successful cross-platform stars to the dark side. Cena himself has rather sarcastically acknowledged a turn in the past, as well as publicly addressing the audience’s reception to him over the years.

John Cena returned to WWE at the 2021 Money in the Bank pay-per-view, confronting Roman Reigns en-route to an unsuccessful Universal Championship challenge at SummeSlam. There is currently no timeframe for his next WWE-related appearances.

Outside of wrestling, Cena’s Peacemaker series recently began airing following the hit success of the titular character in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad last summer. He’s also since been confirmed to star in the Dave Green-helmed Coyote vs. Acme feature film.
