Joey Janela will soon be back on the free agency market, as his contract with All Elite Wrestling expires this weekend.
A day-one AEW roster member will be departing the company imminently, as Joey Janela has revealed his contract expires on Sunday, 1 May. Janela had previously been named as one of the company’s inaugural signees back in January 2019.
‘The Bad Boy’ confirmed to Denise Salcedo in March that he wouldn’t be re-signing with the Tony Khan-helmed promotion. He had stated to Fightful two months prior that he was interested in sticking around, though this has obviously changed since, with Janela claiming to no longer speak to AEW management.
Sunday my AEW contract expires, & I have the same car I had in 2019 before it started. Got me thinking what the fuck did I spend my money on?
I spent it on fucking lobster, lots and lots of fucking lobster aka Did my first contract absolutely 100% correctly!! pic.twitter.com/QfvIdqvhje

After making a name for himself on the independent circuit, Joey Janela came into AEW with a chip on his shoulder, with enthralling hardcore matches early on with Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, and Darby Allin continuing to do wonders for his career. His Lights Out match vs. Omega, aired on the second episode of Dark, received widespread praise.
As the years have gone by and the talent pool has risen, the need for Joey Janela in AEW has severely dwindled. He’s spent the latter stage of his time there wrestling primarily on their YouTube programming, with his last match on Dynamite airing in May 2021 against ‘Hangman’ Adam Page. He’s not wrestled there at all since January.
During his aforementioned interview with Denise Salcedo, Janela claimed that one of his goals post-AEW is to have a steady run in Japan, a country he hasn’t wrestled in since August 2019 (h/t Wrestling Inc.):
“One of my goals is to have a run in Japan, which is something I’ve wanted since I was a child. I’ve done shows in Japan, but I’ve never had a steady run there. That will be in the works very soon.”
Joey Janela currently works primarily for Game Changer Wrestling, where he’s promoted Joey Janela’s Spring Break – typically a WrestleMania weekend event, bar one or two instalments – since 2017.
