AEW Revolution is on course to be one of the most talked about wrestling events of the year, and it’s only March. AEW World Champion Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley are set to meet in a Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch, there’s a “Hall Of Fame worthy” name making a surprise appearance and Sting returns to action for the first time since 2015.
Legendary announcer Jim Ross has called hundreds of Sting matches throughout his illustrious career and will be in the booth when The Icon makes his eagerly waited return. Sting hasn’t competed inside the squared circle since sustaining a serious neck injury in a match against Seth Rollins at WWE Night Of Champions. An injury which may thought would end his career.
However, Sting shockingly appeared at AEW Winter Is Coming, forming an alliance with Darby Allin which would eventually lead to his return to competition, alongside Allin taking on Brian Cage and Ricky Starks of Team Taz in a Street Fight.
Speaking on a recent episode of his Grilling JR podcast, Ross discussed the veteran’s return to the ring, commenting that he’s motivated and that he expects him to “come through with flying colours.”
“I never thought this [Sting wrestling again] was going to happen. Sting is motivated. I think he’s got a little something to prove, that ‘hey look, just ‘coz I’m north of 60..’. He’s still in great shape, he hasn’t let himself go. He trains hard, regularly – that’s always been his MO. He’s always been a gym guy, even from the days that he and Luger owned the gym in Atlanta that a lot of people went to. I think he’s got a little something to prove. Is it going to be a 5-star match? I don’t know that you can have a 5-star match in that environment, against so many inanimate objects surrounding you. A lot of those inanimate objects don’t know how to ‘work’, so it’ll be interesting to see. I think he’ll come through with flying colours.”
In another surprising move AEW also signed Paul Wight aka The Big Show after he failed to agree terms on a new WWE contract.
Inaugural AEW World Champion Chris Jericho recently commented on the signings of Wight and Sting saying that AEW is a welcoming place for ring veterans because they “respect their legends” and everyone is there to be the biggest star that they can be.
