Jim Ross has revealed his favourite AEW match thus far in the company’s short history.
Speaking on his Grillin’ JR podcast, Ross confirmed that top of his list was the clash between Cody and Dustin Rhodes at Double or Nothing in May, 2019.
“I loved Dustin [Rhodes] and Cody. [The best match of the year?] The tag with the Young Bucks and FTR I liked that a lot. I liked Brodie Lee and Cody in that dog collar match. There’s a couple of Moxley matches that I thought were really good, I’m a big fan of Jon Moxley. Overall, just looking back in total, the Rhodes brothers match might be my favorite match thus far that we’ve done in AEW.
“Live crowd, the dramatic use of blood, the story behind it. It became very personal and emotional, it wasn’t a ‘rasslin’ storyline so to speak. It was based on reality. They turned it on and it got me [emotionally].”
Called by Excalibur, Alex Marvez and Jim Ross himself, the match in question is a popular choice, garnering five stars from Dave Meltzer, as well as winning Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Match of the Year award for 2019.An emotional, and extremely bloody, match from the Rhodes brothers saw Cody come out on top before issuing a heartfelt plea to his older brother to team with him against The Young Bucks left the fans inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena on their feet.
Dustin Rhodes has carried on his career renaissance since, having feuds with the like of Shawn Spears, Butcher and Blade and Dark Order.Cody has held the TNT Championship twice, losing it to lifetime champion, the late, Brodie Lee and most recently, Darby Allin.
