Jim Ross has elaborated on Vince McMahon’s dislike of Christian and also confirmed that an absurd pitch is indeed true.
As has been seen throughout WWE history, when a tag team breaks up one member of the team generally performs exponentially better than their former partner. Following the split of Edge and Christian in 2001, Edge would be featured much more prominently with numerous title reigns and accolades throughout his career. For Christian, his booking was nowhere near the level of his former partners and was clearly viewed by management as the proverbial Marty of the former tag team.
When looking back at Christian’s time in WWE, numerous backstage officials have noted in interviews that the former World Champion was at times booked poorly for the simple reason that McMahon just didn’t like him. Discussing Christian’s time in WWE on Grilling JR, Ross admitted that the AEW star deserved more during his run in the company and believes that Christian’s physique was what McMahon took an issue with:
“I thought it was kind of absurd because Christian deserved more time. He could help us, he could work with these guys that were less talented than him and make them look good. I think Vince’s issue with Christian was Christian’s physique, he’s not a big guy, you know? He’s always in great shape. but he’s not a big guy, and Vince has these hard-ons for big guys, big teams more often than not.”
In previous interviews, it has been rumoured that at one point McMahon found Christian to be ugly so wanted to permanently censor his face by placing a blue dot over it whenever the former World Champion was on screen. When asked about this, Ross confirmed that this was an actual idea and pointed out how ridiculous it would be in execution:
“Yeah, it’s real, it’s stupid. How do you take — how do you record that? He’s going to be moving, can you move the blue dot, keep it over your face? I don’t think so. It was just something Vince thought of.”
