‘Good Ol’ J.R’ Jim Ross has confirmed that Sting will serve in a variety of different roles during his tenure with All Elite Wrestling.
When the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion first stepped onto the AEW stage at Winter is Coming on December 2, the rumour mill went into overdrive as to exactly what his role in the company would be.
Some speculated that he would merely be a walk-on part to save babyfaces in peril. Others cited a more managerial role with his spare time being spent backstage in a road agent position. While the rest simply stacked a list of potential opponents for the 61 year old to face.
Now, AEW commentator Jim Ross has confirmed that Sting’s multi-year deal will see him take on a host of roles within the company on the latest edition of his Grilling JR Podcast:
“Having Sting coming to AEW for the first time, what’s really going on? What’s really going on is Tony Khan reached out, hired Sting to a multi year deal. He’s going to have a variety of roles, I don’t know what they are exactly but they will be in a creative capacity where he’s a character on television. There’s a lot of ways to be a character on T.V. that’s been accepted by the audience nowadays that doesn’t include wrestling a match every week.
I don’t think anybody should wrestle a match every week. I think it’s a kiss of death, you want to keep your talent fresh and you don’t want to over expose them. There’s a lot of things Sting can do. These conspiracy theories, they’re rampant. We all thrive on this s**t. ‘What’s the dirt?’ I don’t know. If you come back in 20 minutes I’ll create something for you.”
It was confirmed recently that Sting will indeed step back into the squared circle in competitive bouts – something he’s been pitching for, for years – though these will be in the form of cinematic matches the likes we’ve seen from WWE in 2020.
