Jim Ross Compares Magnum TA To One WWE Legend And One AEW Star

Magnum TA

Jim Ross has discussed legendary NWA competitor Magnum TA and says he is reminded of the two-time NWA United States Champion by one WWE legend and a current AEW Superstar.

Jim Ross became a commentator for Jim Crockett Promotions in 1987, calling some of the finest NWA matches in history. One man whose matches JR didn’t get to call in that promotion were those of Magnum TA’s. Magnum was one of the promotion’s most beloved babyfaces as stood by Dusty Rhodes in his perennial battle with The Four Horsemen. However, Magnum TA’s career was cruelly cut short in 1986 when he crashed his car into a telephone pole causing the right side of his body to be paralysed for months.

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, the voice of AEW Jim Ross discussed Magnum TA’s career saying he had every tool needed to ascend to superstardom. For Ross, he sees a lot of Magnum TA in a current AEW star as well as a certain Texas Rattlesnake.

Ross explained:

“The old school people would say he was a rough babyface because his body was not in the traditional babyface mould. Everybody had to be hairless and all that good stuff, which he wasn’t. He reminds me now a little bit of a Moxley, just that he can wrestle, but he chooses to fight more often. Magnum’s delivery on his interviews was very intense and very focused, I think that’s kind of like his work, intense and focused. He had that intensity that Stone Cold had, as far as having the passion and makes you believe that he came to fight and he came to represent us whether he wanted to say it or not and this guy’s a star.”

“Every intangible in every generation that I’ve been a part of Conrad since the ’70s, he would have checked the boxes for. He could work babyface or heel, he could work with anybody athletically. You believed in him. He could go out and have a bloody street fight with Bruiser Brody just as easily as he could have a 60-minute draw with Ric Flair. Very versatile, very intense, and that’s what he brought with him every time out. So he became very reliable in that regard. All of a sudden, people started believing in him, we did a couple of angles to facilitate that. But people started believing in Magnum TA, he was a beloved character.”

Jim Ross has also recently discussed his thoughts on Paul Wight joining AEW in his role on commentary on AEW Dark: Elevation. Wight set fan’s tongues wagging recently when photos emerged of him appearing to be wearing new wrestling gear during a photoshoot.
