Jim Ross Admits It “Wasn’t Working” For Brian Pillman Jr. In AEW

Jim Ross has backed the decision to let Brian Pillman Jr. leave AEW.

It was recently confirmed that Brian Pillman Jr. had left AEW after his contract with the company expired. The star joined the promotion in 2019 and went on to team with Griff Garrison as the Varsity Blondes, with the pair eventually being joined by Julia Hart.

Despite brief dalliances with the main event picture, including a brief rivalry with MJF the pair slid down the card and struggled to find a secure footing after Hart joined the House of Black and Garrison got injured.

Jim Ross has a long association with the Pillman family, having worked with Brian Pillman during his time in WCW and later in the WWF.

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, the legendary announcer was sympathetic to the second-generation star’s situation, although also conceded that things weren’t working out for him in AEW.

“It wasn’t working,” Ross said. “He’s not losing any ring time. He’ll have plenty of opportunities. He’s just gotta structure his journey and be smart about the decisions that he makes and get all the in-ring time that he can. Wrestle as many matches as he can schedule. So, he’s gonna be fine, just gotta have his plan and work it.

His career took a minor tumble, but not one that you can’t get up from. So, I have a lot of confidence he’s gonna end up very successful in wrestling.”

Jim Ross Gives Update On His Own AEW Future

During the same episode, the veteran gave fans an update on his health as he takes a break from the announce desk. JR admitted he’d had something of a challenging week but was now hopeful that improvement could be on the horizon. The WWE Hall of Famer added that there’s “no timetable” for his return to AEW.
