Jim Cornette believes that WWE’s plans to introduce a new World Heavyweight Championship don’t hold up to logic.
On April 24th, Triple H announced that WWE had created a new World Championship due to Roman Reigns’ dominance. Reigns has held the Universal Title since the summer of 2020 and added the WWE Title at WrestleMania 38 to become the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
Due to Reigns’ part-time schedule, the World Championship is only defended on the biggest shows, and with the 2023 Draft due to come into effect on May 8th, Reigns will be required to stay on SmackDown.
This led to the creation of the new championship, and the announcement that it would be staying on Raw.
“This Is Just For No Reason” – Jim Cornette
During a recent episode of his Drive-Thru podcast, Jim Cornette gave his thoughts on the new championship. The legendary manager suggested that an Interim-Champion might have been more logical, adding that WWE’s plan “doesn’t make sense.”
“I can believe an interim champion, I can buy that, that’s done in sports even though Tony [Khan] does it too much,” Cornette said. “I can buy an interim champion that will sooner or later be reunited with the main championship, but no, this is just for no reason, and the reason that they gave does not hold up to any logic or common sense in terms of the fans’ enjoyment. It doesn’t make any sense.”
The new World Heavyweight Champion will be crowned on May 27th at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Roman Reigns‘ own World Title run will hit the 1000-day mark at the same event.
