Jim Cornette Names The Last Star He Believes WWE Has

By Lyle Kilbane. Published 22nd July 2021.
Jim Cornette

Jim Cornette has lavished praise on the one WWE Superstar he says the company should break the bank on to have on as many shows as they can.

Cornette was speaking on his Jim Cornette’s Drive Thru podcast about John Cena. Cena shocked the wrestling world when he made his eagerly-awaited return to WWE at the end of the Money In The Bank pay-per-view. He confronted Roman Reigns before telling Reigns on Raw that Reigns was an a**hole and that he would see him in Roman’s yard of SmackDown.

According to Jim Cornette, after the reception the sixteen-time champion of the world received he should be on as many shows as possible, no matter the cost.

Cornette explained:

“They should certainly try to get Cena as much as possible. Who knows with his schedule what he’s doing and how much he can be there. But he better be there. At this point, he is worth being a loss leader. He is worth them paying him money that they just can’t recoup at the gate or whatever manner that they are recouping it on big shows these days. They need to spend some money to get him in there to re-energise their TV ratings, their whole product, their whole f*cking deal.”

“The people seeing him back and seeing him so over and people being so electric for him that they can advertise him on RAW, they can advertise him on SmackDown. They can do whatever the f*ck to get people back into this malaise-ridden universe they’ve got here. It’s just bleugh. Let’s see what John can do. If I was Stephanie [McMahon] and Triple H I would ask him to be in my f*cking home movies with my kids. I would do whatever, he is the last star that they have got available to them at that level.”

Jim Cornette then compared the star power of Cena with that of another WWE megastar, Brock Lesnar. Lesnar hasn’t been seen in a WWE ring since he lost the WWE Championship to Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 36.

Cornette continued:

“Brock is a huge star and a huge gate attraction, but he doesn’t just send people into goddam epileptic fits by the sight of him coming back like that, he’s a different kind of over. So they need John because he is going to bring a bunch of attention, some eyeballs, and some energy to this thing. That’s the main thing is some energy and some excitement. They are excited about John Cena so there you go.”

Jim Cornette was then asked if thinks John Cena could defeat Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship in their expected SummerSlam main event bout. Should Cena win that title he will be recognised as a seventeen-time champion of the world and beat Ric Flair’s record.

For Cornette however, that shouldn’t happen:

“No he doesn’t need the belt, but here’s the thing. If he was able to beat Roman Reigns, carry it for 3 months and then drop it back, all the people would remember is that John Cena beat Roman Reigns. I’m not saying that Roman needs to win at SummerSlam. They could do some kabuki sh*t and get a rematch out of it. But I would hope to God that John Cena does not beat Roman Reigns, because that would be backing up. Unless John decides to say ‘F*ck Hollywood I’m back here for 2 years.’ Then have him beat Roman Reigns.”

Jim Cornette also recently ran through the entire WWE roster, carving out particular praise for former NXT UK Women’s Champion, Toni Storm
