Mercedes Mone has been making headlines ever since she sensationally walked out of WWE Raw back in May alongside her tag team partner Naomi. Rumors about possibility of the former Sasha Banks returning to the sports entertainment giant ran rampant for months, but ahead of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom, it became clear that she had other plans in mind as she was announced to appear at the show.
Sure enough, Mercedes Mone confronted KAIRI following her IWGP Women’s Title defence against Tam Nakano at Wrestle Kingdom 17. This set up a match between the pair at Battle in the Valley in San Jose on February 18th. The show sold out quickly following the announcement of Mone’s NJPW in-ring debut.
Jim Cornette Believe Mercedes Mone’s Renewed Career Is Similar To That Of Hulk Hogan After He Left WWE In 1993
Speaking on a recent episode of Jim Cornette’s Drive Thru, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Cornette spoke about Mercedes Mone’s decision to change course instead of going back to WWE for her return to wrestling. He compared her decision to that of Hulk Hogan in 1993, when the Hulkster left WWE for a career renewal in WCW.
“You know, I’ll tell you what. This goes to show you sometimes, because she obviously wasn’t moving tickets like that in the WWE where everybody was watching her on television. But if you take somebody and you put them in a new environment with a new gimmick or new opponents, or new perspective, or just get people interested in what they are doing.
“Now, the same person that was on the card for the WWE, and am not trying to discount her contributions to the WWE, but was she herself selling an extra 2000 tickets to any of those shows just because she was on it? Probably not. But now everybody, she’s got attention, and everybody is going what’s she going to do next? And how’s it going to turn out and blah, blah, blah. And this is, again, the most motivated segment of the audience, the people that are following this.
“So a new coat of paint, and a new environment does wonders for a lot of people. That’s what a lot of people have forgotten about Hogan, before he went to WCW and then the whole NWO thing happened, Vince couldn’t wait to move him out because he wouldn’t draw on a dime, because people were tired of it, he was same old thing. How can I miss you if you won’t go away?
“So now she kind of went to another place and some people are afraid they’re gonna miss her.”
