At Wrestle Kingdom 17 Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay met in one of the more highly anticipated matches in recent times.
In the semi-main event of the show held at the Tokyo Dome, it was Omega who earned the win, and with it the IWGP United States Championship. The bout which pitted two of New Japan’s finest foreign stars against each other in a wild 34 minute contest was later awarded a 6.25-star rating from Dave Meltzer. The rating means that it’s joint-second highest rated match of all time.
The bout tied Kenny Omega’s clash with Kazuchika Okada at NJPW Dominion 2017, and was behind their pair’s legendary seven-star match at Dominion 2018.
Jim Cornette Claims Kenny Omega Could Never Be A Star On The Level Of Brock Lesnar
Reflecting on the bout on his podcast, The Jim Cornette Experience, the legendary manager said that NJPW is the best place for the pair. Cornette added that neither will ever main event WrestleMania, but their presentation fits in with New Japan.
“So each of them, they’re probably in the best place for them in the whole world right there. Because New Japan has fostered this environment, the ominous music, the big entrance is they’re somewhat protected over there from doing really stupid shit probably. Because why would Kenny do so much goofy or stupid sh*t over here and not there unless they don’t let him do it there, and he works harder there.
So neither one of these guys mentally or physically is ever going to main event WrestleMania or be a major level star of the level of Lesnar Reigns, Cena, whatever the fuck in the United States. But it works there with that presentation so I can understand why the people that like that kind of wrestling would like them there.
But you know, again, it just ruins everything for everybody else. These two f*cking self indulgent hassles going out there and killing every goddamn move and finish ever. But if they’re gonna let them do it, but there’s a limited audience for this kind of style, and AEW has got all of them already. And Kenny has never even been the top guy in AEW.”
Kenny Omega will look at add the AEW World Trios Title to his newly won championship on the January 11th episode of Dynamite. On the show the star will team with the Young Bucks to take on champions Death Triangle.
The bout is the final match of their ‘Best of Seven’ series with the scored tied at three wins a piece. It has already been announced that the match will be a be a Escalera de la Muerte (ladder) match.
