Jim Cornette Hits Out At ‘Ugly’ Current Championship

Jim Cornette

Jim Cornette has slammed the design of one particular championship belt, likening it to something that has been run over by a tractor.

Wrestling veteran Jim Cornette is never one to hold back when he has a strong opinion something and that has proven true once again.

Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, The Jim Cornette Experience, the promoter turned podcaster, branded the Intercontinental Championship one of the ugliest belt designs he’d ever seen. He described it as “abysmal” before likening it to the AWA Championship that was famously run over by Stan Hansen in a tractor in the 1980’s.

“By the way, is the Intercontinental title belt one of the ugliest championship belts you’ve ever seen? It’s abysmal. It looks like like the AWA belt after Hansen ran over it with his tractor,”

The current design for the Intercontinental Championship was introduced in 2019, and first held by Shinsuke Nakamura.

On the June 10th edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Gunther defeated Ricochet to become the new Intercontinental Champion. The victory marked the giant Austrian’s first title win on the main roster. Gunther, under his previous alias of WALTER, had previously held the United Kingdom Championship for a staggering 870 days.

After eventually losing the championship to Ilja Dragunov the star moved to NXT and was renamed Gunther in January 2022. After losing to Bron Breakker on the April 5th episode of NXT 2.0 the former WALTER moved to the main roster where he was joined by Marcel Barthel, now known as Ludwig Kaiser.

In recent weeks it has been reported that Gunther has been impressing “people of influence” since moving to SmackDown. The report notes that Vince McMahon is said to have been a fan of his work on the main roster, while his move to the United States and new impressive physique have also drawn praise.
