Jeff Jarrett remains a fan of a TNA stipulation match that is often the subject of criticism and ridicule from wrestling fans.
TNA gained a reputation for its unique presentation and divisive stipulation matches over the years. While the Ultimate X match became something of a fan favourite over time thanks to the work of the exciting X-Division, matches such as the Steel Asylum, the Electrified Steel Cage and the Reverse Battle Royal are not looked back on as fondly. While most of these were one-offs, one stipulation would make an appearance on TV and PPV 13 times, the King of the Mountain match.
Essentially a reverse ladder match, the contest sees the wrestlers pin or submit their opponents to become eligible to hang the championship above the ring. The opponent who is pinned then goes into the penalty box for 2 minutes and still requires a pinfall or submission to become eligible. Sounds simple, right?
Discussing the match and the negative reaction on the My World podcast, Jarrett questioned why fans have constantly criticised the match:
“It’s good storytelling. Why is it criticized? I think a narrative gets started.”
In response to the audience’s reaction, Jarrett responded that it is a vocal minority of fans as opposed to the overwhelming majority:
“The reality is, the very small sample of these thumbs up or thumbs down, I think it totals in this particular PPV [Slammiversary 2009] 100. That fraction of thumbs up/thumbs down, is it really reflective [of audience satisfaction]?”
Recently Jeff Jarrett revealed who he believed really killed WCW.
