WWE Hall of Famer JBL has discussed his admiration for current WWE producer and noted fight lover Finlay, calling him one of the best wrestlers ever.
JBL had perhaps his most famous in-ring encounter with Finlay at WrestleMania 24 when the two bruisers met in a Belfast Brawl. But the men’s relationship stretches back to the early nineties when the pair worked together in Europe for Catch Wrestling Association.
Speaking on GAW TV JBL explained that as good as Finlay was when he got to the US, he was one of the best ever to lace a pair of boots when he competed in Europe:
“By the time he came to the States, he was older and he got hurt a little bit, and he wasn’t like he was back in the early ’90s. I wish America could have seen him back in the late ’80s, early ’90s, he was the best I’ve ever seen.”
JBL also touched on Finlay’s more modern contributions to the wrestling business, his work with the female stars of WWE. The former United States Champion has long been a producer for the company with a focus on developing the stars of what was the Divas and now women’s division:
“Then he got handed the women and … he helped turn, many of the women did it as well, helped turn that into the incredible [division] that we have today, this incredible movement.”
JBL then talked of his own run-in with Finlay in the ring that left him one tooth down. According to the former WWE Champion, the Belfast native wasn’t happy until he saw that the tooth had been knocked out:
“He came back into the dressing room and he said, ‘Everything okay?’ I knew my tooth had been knocked out, and I said, ‘Yeah, it’s fine’ … I took a bite out of the sandwich and my tooth fell out. I go, ‘That b*stard knocked my tooth out,’ and he was right around the corner and he came to me and goes, ‘Yes!’ and left. He was so happy.”
