JBL Recalls Almost Being In A Car Crash Before His First-Ever WrestleMania Match

WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield has shared a wild backstage story about nearly being involved in an accident on the way to WrestleMania 13, all thanks to The Godfather driving under the influence.

Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL recalled how he and Ron Simmons were set to be driven to the Rosemont Horizon Arena by The Godfather. However, what should have been a routine journey quickly turned into a dangerous situation due to The Godfather being “high as a kite” behind the wheel.

JBL recounted the moment he realised something was wrong:

“Godfather picks me and Ron up, and he’s going to drive us to WrestleMania. He turns into the wrong hotel, and we’re supposed to be going to the arena. I realise he’s about to drive through the window in the hotel lobby, and I’m not making this up, he has no idea where he is. We realise he’s higher than a freaking kite.”

The situation didn’t improve once they got back on the road, as The Godfather himself soon recognised how close he had come to disaster.

“He’s driving down the road and he goes, ‘Did you guys see me almost drive through that window?’”

JBL recalled, laughing about the incident. At that point, he and Simmons insisted that The Godfather pull over so they could take control of the car and safely drive to the arena.

Despite the chaotic journey, JBL went on to compete in his first-ever WrestleMania match that night, teaming with Barry Windham in a four-way tag bout.

Who Is On JBL’s Mt. Rushmore Of Pro Wrestling Tag Teams?

JBL shared his Mt. Rushmore of pro wrestling tag teams and named some legendary teams such as The Road Warriors, Hawk and Animal, The Steiner Brothers, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, and his final pick he struggled with for a while before settling on the New Age Outlaws.

Also on his podcast, the former WWE Champion explained his hatred of the Elimination Chamber match.
