JBL Names Who He Thinks Would Win A Modern-Day WWE Brawl For All

JBL Discusses Heat With Former WWE Announcer

WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield has revealed which active wrestlers he believes could win a modern-day Brawl for All tournament.

Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL reflected on his experience in the infamous 1998 Brawl for All, where he reached the final before being knocked out by Bart Gunn on the 24 August 1998 episode of Raw.

Asked who would triumph in a 2025 version of the tournament, he named three wrestlers he feels would be strong contenders.

“There are some pretty good shooters there. Chad Gable is a really good shooter and a good wrestler. You’ve got some tough guys. Sheamus, I think, would do great just because he’s a big tough guy, 100% Bobby Lashley, no doubt about it. Armed Forces Champion, legit tough guy and can bench press the freaking world, I’m pretty safe in betting on Lashley,” he said.

Chad Gable, currently wrestling under a mask as “El Grande Americano”, remains an active competitor in WWE. Sheamus, a veteran since 2006, has recently been engaged in a rivalry with Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker.

Bobby Lashley, however, is now signed with AEW. His current contract would likely prevent him from participating in any WWE-organised Brawl for All tournament, should the company ever revive the concept.

The original Brawl for All, which combined boxing and wrestling, remains controversial in the company’s history, with many questioning its risks and purpose as the winner, Bart Gunn, did not seem to advance his position on the card despite the win.

What Did JBL Think Of The Brawl For All Tournament When He First Heard The Idea?

JBL recalled his initial feelings upon learning about the plans for the Brawl for All tournament and said that he told Bruce Prichard, who called him to ask if he would participate, that it sounded like the “dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.” But while he thought the concept was ridiculous, he did say the pay he received for his participation was excellent.
