WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield has weighed in on which wrestlers should have been given a world title during their time in WWE.
Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL discussed several stars he believes were deserving of a World Championship but never had the opportunity to hold one.
“I think Ted [DiBiase] should have been the WWE Champion, I think he should have been for a long time. I think [Roddy] Piper should have, I think Dustin Rhodes, especially as Goldust, I thought Goldust should have been a champion, I thought he’d have been a great champion. He was a great worker that did everything and had incredible heat. I mean, there’s tons and tons of guys. Shelton Benjamin should have been a World Champion—there are so many guys.”
Despite his legendary career, DiBiase never officially held the company’s top prize, though he did purchase the title from Andre the Giant in 1988 at The Main Event. However, his official accolades include the World Tag Team, North American Heavyweight, 24/7, and Million-Dollar Championships.
Roddy Piper, another iconic figure in WWE history, held the Intercontinental Championship and the World Tag Team titles but never secured a World Championship.
Dustin Rhodes also never captured a world title but won multiple other championships, including the Hardcore and Intercontinental titles, as well as two versions of the company’s tag team championships.
Shelton Benjamin held the Raw Tag Team, 24/7, Intercontinental, and United States Championships, but never reached the pinnacle of WWE’s world title scene.
Who Did JBL Say Was The Greatest Tag Team In Wrestling History?
JBL spoke about who he believes was the greatest tag team in wrestling history and said that the Road Warriors, Hawk and Animal, were the greatest to ever team up. Bradshaw said that the Road Warriors were innovative and made a lot of money due to their style and the fact that every wrestler wanted to work with them.
