JBL Recalls The “Greatest Rib Of All-Time”

WWE Hall of Famer JBL has recalled what he believes to be “the greatest rib of all-time” during a new exclusive interview with Inside The Ropes.

Speaking with Inside The Ropes own Liam Alexander-Stewart, WWE Hall of Famer JBL would discuss the modern wrestling product revealing that he is a huge fan of the athleticism on show from current WWE Superstars adding that he does not want to be “the old guy that goes outside and yells up the clouds and say our generation was better.”

During the interview, the longest-reigning WWE Champion in Smackdown TV history would discuss his favourite WWE locker room ribs, the toughest wrestlers he has ever encountered as well as a potential return to the WWE as a manager to up and coming talent.

When asked what the greatest ‘rib’ he witnessed in his tenured WWE career was, JBL would recall a now-iconic meeting between Hornswoggle and a Chicken during a WWE event.

“Oh, the Hornswoggle rib with the chicken under the ring in Mexico, that was one of the greatest ribs of all time, and we got the video, as you’ve probably seen of the chicken under the ring. We called Debbie who said, Hey, we’ve got this video.

We put it out there. They gave us clearance to put it out there. It was owned by one of the cameramen, I think, but so technically they [WWE] didn’t own it, but always went through the right hoops to make sure we didn’t upset the apple cart. “

JBL would also reveal the planning behind the rib, noting that it was all the work of former WWE Superstar and ‘genius’ Fit Finlay.

“But the planning of this rib for Finlay to find out that Hornswoggle was scared of chickens because he saw him in a scene with The Great Khali and he saw him jump from a chicken and then from the security guard, saying he wants to get him to sending Davey Coates to go get a chicken and put it on the ring with him and to put a camera under there.

This rib was very elaborate, and it’s just that to me is the ultimate rib. You know, I don’t like ribs where you tear up stuff or people’s property. I love stuff like this. I thought that was one of the greatest ribs of all time, and it’s all Fit. Finlay is a genius. He’s a very smart guy, but he’s also one of these guys that you do not want against you because he will mess with you in a very entertaining way.”

Finlay and Hornswoggle have previously told the hilarious story of how Hornswoggle found himself trapped under the ring in Mexico face to face with a live chicken.

Both men were guests on Stories With Brisco and Bradshaw where they both gave their side of the story. According to Finlay, the chicken was payback for Hornswoggle’s continuous ribs on one of WWE’s security team.

Finlay began:

“We were on a tour in South America and one of our stops we were in Mexico somewhere. We were on a flight between shows and Scott Acock, the security guy, great guy. He’s an ex-cop and ex-military. He’s going ‘that son of a gun. He keeps ribbing me. I’m gonna get him back.’”

“[I said] You know he’s afraid of chickens. Scott asks ‘How do you know he is afraid of chickens?’ Well, there was a thing that Khali was doing where he had all the women around him dancing. They had chickens and goats and all of this stuff. I saw ‘Swoggle selling the chickens. I saw the fear in his eyes, I know he is afraid of chickens.”

Hornswoggle then interjects to confirm his fear:

“People fear a lot of things. The two things I fear are the dark and birds in general. Birds are unpredictable, especially chickens and roosters. They have talons! This is a phobia of mine and a lot of people. It’s a common phobia, people train roosters to fight.”

Finlay then continued, noting that he keeps track of his colleague’s fears for just such an occasion as this:

“On my phone in my notes, I have a list of what everyone is afraid of. It’s there just in case I need to use it. I don’t know when but when the time is right. So we call one of the production guys and say ‘Hey, can you get us a chicken?’ He asks fried or boiled? I’m like no we need a live one. So we put Hornswoggle under the ring and we came up with this plan. We’ll put him under the ring, and then we’ll throw the chicken under the ring.”

“We get ‘Swoggle under the ring, and we rig up lights under the ring. We get a camera rigged up, there’s massive pyro for Chris Masters. While everyone is looking at Masters, the rooster gets thrown under there. You hear this massive AAHHH! It’s running around and he’s swiping at it. It’s running around because the rooster is scared too. He’s screaming and swearing at it.”

Hornswoggle then finishes up the story claiming to be lucky to be alive following his close encounter of the poultry kind:

“I see the apron fly up. I think someone took a bump above me. And now I see a camera under there, I’m like why is there a camera there. I turn and I am eye to eye with this rooster. I am not happy at all. Now I think I’m going to throw my whole spot away. There was a kendo stock and my jacket. I grabbed the kendo stick thinking if it comes at me, I’m going to swing at it. Finally, it comes back one more time, and then it gets away. It was the absolute worst, too far. I could have been killed.”

Inside The Ropes’ Liam Alexander-Stewart spoke with Dylan Postl FKA Hornswoggle in 2021 and had a chance to ask the Former WWE Cruiserweight Champion about the now-iconic rib, commenting on the prank Postl would state:

“Are we talking about this goddamn chicken thing?

I thought this was done. I thought I was done. I told JBL I did the podcast last week. I said I thought we were over this. I wrote it in the book Life is Short and So Am I available at Amazon.com or at DylanPostl.com I thought it was done. I really did. And then it got brought up and my Twitter, I would just get

GIFS or JIFS whatever they are called. I’m thirty-five years old. I don’t know what the hell it’s called.

I thought it was done. I would just get pictures and videos of roosters and chickens. I said, guys, this is. It was one of the worst days at work of my life they put a live rooster under the ring with me during a match while I was under there.

It was like it was the absolute worst, worst I could have. I could have died. They want to kill me.”
