“It Doesn’t Mean Anything To Me”: Hart Family Member Dismisses AEW Owen Hart Cup

Martha Hart holding AEW Owen Hart Cup - Davey Boy Smith Jr. ITR Exclusive

Davey Boy Smith Jr. has little interest in AEW’s Owen Hart Cup.

In September 2021, All Elite Wrestling announced its partnership with The Owen Hart Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides assistance and opportunities to those in need around the world. Owen Hart tragically passed away in 1999 after a wrestling stunt went horribly wrong at the Over The Edge pay-per-view, resulting in Hart falling to his death.

Along with collaborating with the organisation to honour the legacy of the late, great wrestler, AEW announced that each year wrestlers would compete for the Owen Hart Cup. Debuting in 2022, the Men’s and Women’s single elimination tournament would see inaugural winners Adam Cole and Britt Baker presented with the trophies and commemorative title belts by Dr. Martha Hart at Double or Nothing. Returning in 2023, Ricky Starks and Willow Nightingale would win the second incarnation of the tournament.

“I Don’t Really Give A Sh*t About It”: Davey Boy Smith Jr. On Owen Hart Cup

Davey Boy Smith Jr. has given his thoughts on the annual AEW competition. With the tournament set to return in 2024, it is very unlikely that Smith Jr. will be a part of future presentation ceremonies or take part as a competitor.

Speaking exclusively with Kenny McIntosh of Inside The Ropes, the MLW star was asked for his opinion on the tournament. Not being asked to be involved in previous tournaments by AEW and questioning the connection, Smith Jr. gave the following thoughts:

Honestly, not much. It would be like, I don’t know, Impact Wrestling naming something the Jumbo Tsuruta Cup and their wife having ties with Impact Wrestling. It just doesn’t really mean anything to be honest with you.

I’m glad they did something in Owen Hart’s name, but they never asked me to be a part of it. I may have if they asked me to. I honestly didn’t watch much of it. I didn’t think much of it. But I’m not insulting it, I just don’t think that it has much merit. So doesn’t mean much to me honestly. I don’t care, I don’t really give a sh*t about it.

Elsewhere in the interview, Smith Jr. addressed the recent allegations against former WWE CEO Vince McMahon.

Recently AEW announced the brackets for the men and women’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament.

Davey Boy Smith Jr. returns to MLW on Saturday, February 3rd, available on FITE TV!
