With the Royal Rumble just around the corner, new reports have suggested that more names from outside WWE are being considered for the 30-woman match.
In an unusual turn of events, WWE announced several women that will take part in the 2022 Royal Rumble on the 29th of January. In amongst the current crop of WWE Superstars were several former talents including WWE Hall Of Famers The Bella Twins and Lita.
The most surprising name announced for the match was current IMPACT Knockouts Champion Mickie James. James was released from the company in April 2021 and caused a stir after revealing she had been sent her belongings by the company inside a trash bag.
Fightful Select has shed more light on the surprise additions to the Rumble match in a new report. Their report says that the company has acted a lot earlier than usual in securing the names for the showpiece bout and the wrestlers involved didn’t know that their participation would be announced – which is said to have been done to boost ticket sales for the event.
The report also notes that Mickie James’ name in the scripts for the announcement was preceded with “(?) Impact Knockouts Champion (?).” Pat McAfee did make reference to the fact that James was the current IMPACT Knockouts Champion on the show and this reference to the title is reportedly part of the agreed deal for James to appear between IMPACT Wrestling and WWE.
Tantalisingly for wrestling fans, the report concludes that other “interesting” and “big” outside names have been pitched for the Rumble but there is no word if any of these names will appear.
