The highly anticipated showdown between WALTER and Ilja Dragunov for the NXT United Kingdom Championship will take place at NXT TakeOver: 36.
The bout had originally been scheduled to take place on an upcoming episode of NXT UK, but after the contracts were signed, there was an altercation backstage which resulted in WALTER sustaining a “severe” injury to his left hand.
It was later confirmed by Mike Johnson of PWInsider that the injury was indeed legitimate.
The pair first met for the championship in October 2020, in a brutal contest that received praise across the board. It was temporarily the highest-rated WWE match of all time on Cagematch.net, before being awarded a five-star rating from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer.
WALTER signed with WWE in 2019, debuting at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool in January of that year. The giant Austrian defeated Pete Dunne for the NXT United Kingdom Championship at NXT TakeOver: New York that April.
The leader of Imperium has since gone on to become the longest-reigning champion in the belt’s history and currently stands as the longest-reigning champion in WWE today.
Since winning the title, WALTER has defeated the likes of Tyler Bate, Tomasso Ciampa, and most recently Rampage Brown.
On the most recent episode of NXT WWE announced that NXT TakeOver: 36 will take place on Sunday 22nd August, the night after SummerSlam.
There has been no official word on where TakeOver will take place, but it is believed it will be held at the Capitol Wrestling Center in Orlando, Florida. It was reported by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer back in June that the black and gold brand would hold the event at their most recent home.
