Royal Rumble winner Edge has opened up about the surprising return of his tag team partner and lifelong friend, Christian, at the event.
Like Edge, Christian had been forced into retirement, in this case back in 2014 following a concussion that was thought to be career-ending. However, ‘Captain Charisma’ made a shocking return to the ring when he entered this year’s Royal Rumble at number 24. Following an emotional hug with Edge, he lasted almost 20 minutes before being eliminated by Seth Rollins.
In an interview with CBS Sports, the ‘Rated-R Superstar’ spoke of his happiness and pride at seeing Christian make his way down the ramp.
“The Rumble was one of those instances where, when Christian was coming down the ramp, I was so happy for him. I was so proud of him and proud of the work he put in and the grind and struggle to get cleared and be able to do this again. Similar to me, he can end it on his terms and not just have it taken away when you don’t expect it. That’s a hard thing to swallow, and now we have a chance to have that not be the case, and that’s just really special.”
Since the Royal Rumble, there has been much speculation on when we will see Christian next. Edge himself has gone on record to say he believes a tag team run reuniting the ‘Rocket Strappers’ needs to happen. While there have been reports that Christian will appear in WWE on a part-time basis, the former World Heavyweight Champion has been more cryptic, tweeting after the Rumble to say “If that was it, it was on my own terms. If it wasn’t, then…”.
The future for Edge is more concrete, as he has committed to appearing every week and, as the winner of the Royal Rumble, is guaranteed to face either Roman Reigns or Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 37 in Tampa, Florida.
