In the 2016 WWE Draft, Heath Slater was the only active Superstar not selected by either Raw or SmackDown, making him a free agent. That then became the storyline for him where he tried to earn a contract with either brand.
During a segment on RAW that year, Slater interrupted a Lesnar and Heyman in-ring promo. Determined to grab a RAW contract, he challenged Brock to a match and spoke about wanting to provide for his kids – Brock was then given some rare mic time of his own to give his opinion of Slater’s kids.
I got kids too man. Come on in her, I feel you, let’s talk about your kids. I don’t give a s**t about your kids. You got two choices right here. One, you walk out of here on your own two feet. Two, you can stand there and keep pissing me off.
Heath chose option two. He then received several suplex’ and an F5 for his troubles. Speaking on Table Talk, Heath Slater has revealed more about that promo. According to Slater, he caught Vince McMahon backstage right after the segment and the “I Got Kids” t-shirt was already being suggested.
That segment put me on the map, but slapped me in my face too. The whole, ‘I don’t give a s**t about your kids was supposed to be, ‘I don’t give a damn about your kids’. I guess the crowd was into it and the people were… hey, I got a shirt out of that segment.
So, I had the segment with Brock and Paul and after four scripts or 20 minutes before I go out, I literally had to go out there and do my s**t because I didn’t know what was going on. So, my music hits, Paul is cutting a promo. Paul says his, I forget what my next line was.
I’m like, ‘Oh, no’. I pulled my guns out and was like, ‘Damnit, all these people here know I’m going to get my ass kicked. [Brock] knows he’ll whip my ass, but I have to do this. I got kids! I need this job!’
The next thing I know, I catch Vince in the back and was like, ‘Woah! I got kids! I need this job! Hey print that out!’ That was not even in my lines.
Though it wasn’t an official match, Slater was squashed by Lesnar, but the former ‘Three Man Band’ member did profit from the segment as “I Got Kids” became his new signature catchphrase. Slater did eventually earned a contract with SmackDown where he found a tag partner for some time in the form of Rhyno.
Heath Slater was with Rhyno for several years until July 2019 when Rhyno parted ways with WWE. A year later it would be Slater who exited WWE during the covid-19 budget cuts in the Summer of 2020.
