“I Felt Like I Let Them Down”: Christian Cage Admits He Was Unhappy With WWE Match

Christian Cage Admits He Was Not Cleared To Compete In WWE Match

Christian Cage has looked back on a particular match from his WWE career that he was not pleased with.

Back in March 2014, the AEW star competed in what appeared to be his final match on Raw as he was medically disqualified shortly afterwards due to concussion-related issues. Although Cage did make his official return in the 2021 Royal Rumble match, there was one match that took place the previous year.

On an episode of Raw in June 2020, Cage faced off against Randy Orton in an unsanctioned match. Despite protests from Ric Flair, Cage still agreed to the match to defend the honour of his best friend Edge. Following a low blow from Flair, Cage was hit with the punt and quickly pinned by Orton shortly afterwards.

Discussing his road to return with Chris Van Vliet, Cage was asked if he was cleared to compete in the unsanctioned match. Cage responded that he was not and added that he was not happy with how that day played out:

“I was not. [But you took a punt?] Probably not the smartest thing to do, but there were ways around it at the time in the Performance Center. So that’s what we did. But I was not happy about that day, because I felt that I could do more. And then when the ratings came in, it was the highest-rated show in a long time. I was like, wow, people really thought I was gonna wrestle and they were excited to see me wrestle.

I feel like I kind of let them down. So that was another thing that was in my head is this how I want to go out? It was unsanctioned. Do I want that to be the last memory people have of me being in the ring?”

Ahead of Double or Nothing, Tony Khan hailed Christian Cage as one of the best signings in AEW history.

Also in the interview, it was revealed that Jon Moxley played a huge part in the AEW star becoming All Elite.
