“I Can Only Blame Myself”: Ricochet Addresses How WWE Run Ended; Admits One Aspect Of Booking Was Not What He Wanted

Ricochet has looked back on his run in WWE and how he doesn’t blame anyone but himself for how things played out.

First signing with WWE back in 2018 as part of NXT before being called up to the main roster the following year, the high-flyer had reigns with the North American, Intercontinental and United States Championships and often lived up to his nickname of the Highlight of the Night due to his impressive athleticism.

However, while the matches always got a positive reaction from the fans, in terms of storylines and direction the booking of Ricochet was often met with criticism from fans and wrestlers, with Will Ospreay being notably vocal towards the end of the former WWE star’s run.

Often placed in multi-man matches or booked in a one-sided squash, most notably the Brock Lesnar match back in 2020, the former United States Champion became one of many that fans wanted to see do more but never got the chance.

Appearing on The Ringer Wrestling Show, the AEW star stated that while he could blame others, he only blames himself for the lack of push, assuming that with his booking there was a higher priority on the quantity of matches and not quality:

“You can place the blame anywhere, but I just blame myself…that’s the only person I can blame because that’s all you can do. Obviously I didn’t do something, I don’t know what it was. For me, again, frustrating is maybe not the word, because again my last couple of years I met my future wife there, I made mad connections, the locker room was always awesome. As far as creatively, I mean yeah, there would have been more I’d like to do.

Just again, mostly for the fans that want to see me do stuff, not even for me. It’s more frustrating for me to see the fans want me to go out there and actually do something of some substance. I was out there a lot, I was on television a lot, I was used a lot. But the quality of what I was doing specifically wasn’t there. There was a lot of quantity of Ricochet, but the quality of what he was getting just wasn’t what I wanted.”

Continuing, the AEW star noted that while he does blame himself, it was not a frustrating experience:

“That’s okay, that’s how it falls. I can only blame myself. I can’t blame anybody else, I just can’t. But it wasn’t frustrating because I had a lot of good times there still. But was there more of what I wanted to do? Absolutely. But man, I can’t say it was frustrating because I still had a good time.”

Ricochet Elaborates On Joining AEW
