WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has shared his thoughts on John Cena’s career, stating that he believes Cena would have been one of the greatest villains in wrestling history.
Cena, widely regarded as one of WWE’s top babyfaces of all time, led the company for over a decade, staying true to his mantra of Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect. Despite years of fan debates and speculation, he never fully embraced a heel turn at the peak of his career. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Hogan was asked if he thought Cena should have made the transition to being a villain. Drawing from his own career, Hogan reflected on the power of a well-executed heel turn.
“In my opinion, I think John would’ve been one of the greatest heels ever because he was such a great babyface. You repent. After you’ve cut everybody’s throats, stolen all the money, and cheated, then when you repent and beg for forgiveness, the wrestling fans will make you an even bigger babyface.”
Hogan himself underwent a dramatic shift in 1996, turning heel and joining the nWo after his babyface popularity from the 80s and early 90s began to wane. His transformation into “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan became one of wrestling’s most legendary reinventions. Cena, on the other hand, remained loyal to his heroic persona throughout his WWE career. However, he briefly gave fans a glimpse of what a heel version of his character might have looked like during the Firefly Fun House match against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36.
