A much-wanted match was reportedly pitched for WrestleMania 39 but turned down.
In a move that has dismayed many fans, Brock Lesnar is set to battle with The Nigerian Giant, Omos, on the Grandest Stage Of Them All this April. However, there were several other pitches made for The Conqueror before the match was made.
These included the likes of Bray Wyatt, Bobby Lashley, and even ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. According to Sports Illustrated, another name on the list was WWE Intercontinental Champion, Gunther.
Fans have been clamouring for that particular match ever since the pair had a brief face-to-face in the 2023 Royal Rumble. Unfortunately, it might not happen anytime soon as SI’s report notes that there is a “prevailing belief” in the company that the Austrian star won’t be ready for The Beast Incarnate for another year.
WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther says a match against Brock Lesnar has to happen
Gunther himself believes that the dream bout pitting him against Lesnar “has to happen at some point”.
The Ring General told The Ringer Wrestling Show that this is not only because the fans want to see it but because he sees Lesnar as his “biggest obstacle.”
“Brock is the one that has to happen at some point. I think I made him my personal biggest obstacle. The [Royal Rumble] was literally the first time I met him. [It was] brief, but that moment that we had in the Rumble was great because that was all I needed out of it. It was basically like a real-life confirmation that the audience is up for that. They want to see it.” (H/T Wrestling Inc)
Despite not getting Lesnar at WrestleMania this year, Gunther will be defending his Intercontinental Championship.
However, after a chaotic Fatal Five-Way match to determine the challenger on SmackDown ended with both Drew McIntyre and Sheamus getting pinfalls, it is still unknown who will go on to face him, although this will be decided on March 17th.
