During Wednesday night’s edition of NXT, it was officially announced that Io Shirai would defend the NXT Women’s Championship against Rhea Ripley next week.
Though champion and challenger didn’t come together to hype the bout, both women partook in a special video package entitled ‘Prime Target’ in order to air their feelings about each other.
While the NXT Women’s Champion discussed how she was without a doubt the best singles performer in the world today and re-iterated what she said last week, that she wasn’t afraid of nightmares, the challenger had a different stance on arguably the biggest match of her year so far.
Reflecting on how things has stalled and crumbled for her following the WrestleMania 36 loss to Charlotte Flair, Rhea Ripley looked nothing but determined to re-capture the gold she first won in December 2019.
Talking heads filled the rest of the segment hyping both women, before it was announced that the pair weren’t going to wait until the next TakeOver. They were going to tear each other apart in the pursuit of glory in seven days time.
This NXT Women’s Championship bout came about during last week’s black and gold edition, when Shirai openly challenged Ripley in order to prove that she was the very best.
With Rhea brooding over her loss of the gold on ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’ and her slow burning heel persona bubbling to the surface, next week’s main event is a must watch and could change the landscape of NXT’s women’s division for good.
