Tony Khan has discussed how Chris Jericho’s shock GCW appearance came to be.
Following a previous confrontation on Ring of Honor TV, Matt Cardona interrupted Chris Jericho and announced that he would be challenging the Ring of Honor World Champion for the title at the upcoming Final Battle pay-per-view. While Cardona has made numerous appearances on AEW to attack The Learning Tree, Jericho decided to return the favour.
At GCW Highest in the Room 3, Chris Jericho made a surprise appearance at the show, attacking Matt Cardona to allow Cardona’s opponent Effy to pick up the victory. After the bell, Jericho also attacked Effy. The appearance was especially surprising given that the relationship between AEW and GCW has been frosty as of late with Effy making comments about Tony Khan and contracted stars being reportedly pulled from GCW shows as a result.
“I Was Happy To Send Chris Jericho To Promote The Match”: Tony Khan
Speaking on the Final Battle media call, Khan noted that Cardona played a huge part in the Jericho appearance and was happy to have the former World Champion help promote the match:
“Matt helped put that together. Matt asked me about it, and obviously, I was happy to send Chris to promote the match that is happening on ROH as part of the double main event. It’s something we spent weeks building up on ROH and AEW TV, which is a nice thing.
There is a lot of matches and potential things that could happen with Matt being the challenger and potentially being the ROH World Champion going forward. That’s something to keep an eye on. With Matt appearing there, and this being a title match, it made sense to do something to promote. It’s very much along the lines of things we’ve done with other matches along the ways over the years.”
With the ROH show just a few days away, the main event has been confirmed.
